Made in Britain
Although globalisation has been beneficial in many ways to today’s way of living, there’s no doubt that the availability of cheaper products and materials from overseas has led to a decline in ‘buying British’. For a company like us - it’s time to put the pride back into British manufacturing and return the “Made in Britain” stamp of value and quality back to the sector where it belongs.
Did you know that British manufacturing is the sixth largest manufacturing economy in the world and that the sector contributes £150 billion to national output, that’s around one seventh of our national wealth and the sector is directly responsible for over three million jobs, that’s one in nine of the entire workforce. It also directly supports around 1.5 million in the service sector. For so long manufacturing has been the forgotten son of the economy, left to fend for itself while governments focused on new growth sectors. We have many homegrown industries and innovations to be proud of. Buying products that are made here in the UK is supporting a British firm, which in turn creates work elsewhere.
Contrary to popular belief, manufacturing hasn’t all gone to the Far East, (we are a good example, as CMD reached its quarter of a century milestone last year) and many of those that did are now starting to repatriate their manufacturing facilities back to the UK. With the weakened pound, manufacturing outside the UK has become more expensive and accessing cheap labour markets like China or Taiwan as prime examples were always going to be a medium term benefit, as these local economies develop then labour rates inevitably increase. But it’s not all about cost; it is our ability to develop quality, innovative products and rapid response to customer demand that allows us, as a British manufacturer to compete against low wage economies like China.
British Manufacturing faces a whole new challenge with the world to climate change initiatives towards reducing our carbon emissions and our environmental footprint. It is now down to UK manufacturers to grasp these opportunities before international competitors get there first. With the help of newly generated consumer pressure around product miles and packaging, forcing suppliers, manufacturers and retailers to source more locally produced materials/products like us.
CMD In Britain
Having been established in Britain back in 1984, CMD have continued where possible, to source local materials and expertise. Our foundations are important to us, as we believe in the benefits and traditions of British manufacturing:
-
Our design team is based in house, allowing us to understand your needs and work together to provide solutions.
-
We can be sure of the quality of our products as they are manufactured to meet British Standards requirements.
-
As environmental issues increase, sourcing from domestic companies cut down on the carbon footprint for transporting materials and products.
-
As we manufacture domestically we do not rely imports, thus improving our turn around times.
Even though British manufacturing is perceived to be higher costing, CMD strive to ensure prices remain competitive and in line with the industry without sacrificing on quality. An example of our British manfucaturing is the best selling Cygnus monitor arm and our Rackplus range of power distribution units.
We are on the cusp of resurgence in British manufacturing
– so come and join us in making the difference with CMD
