Working From Home Should Be The Same As Working From An Office

2nd, February 2012

The increasing and widespread use of the internet has had a huge impact on businesses in the last decade. Many companies’ services are now based entirely around e-commerce or web services. The computer industry is huge and affects nearly every other industry in the world. One of the big changes the internet has caused is the availability of remote working. As long as an employee has access to the internet, they can access emails, files and often an intranet that allows them to connect with other employees from wherever they are. Due to this, some companies now ask their managers to work from home. This saves money on office space for the company. It is also good for the employee as they do not have to commute as often, only to big meetings, and they can work from the comfort of their home. However, if you are thinking about working from home, you should be able to create a similar environment to an office so you feel motivated to work and less likely to be distracted by your home life.

One way of creating a good office feel is to have a comfortable, ergonomic workstation. If you are going to be sat at home on the computer all day, you must ensure you are comfortable as to prevent neck and back pain. One way of doing this is to have a height adjustable monitor stand. This means you can raise or lower the monitor according to the chair you are using and how comfortable you are feeling at the time. Moving the monitor every few hours or so allows you to stretch your back rather than sitting in the same position for eight hours.

Another way of creating an office feel at home is to make sure the space is tidy and clutter free. An office usually has lots of cables connecting to the computer, the printer, the scanner and sometimes several other devices depending on the nature of the business. All of these cables can often leave a tangled mess on the floor, leaving the space feeling messy and unprofessional. If you can hide cables and keep them organised you may find your work space allows you to get into the right frame of mind much more easily. Skirting board cable trunking allows you to keep all of your cables together pressed against the skirting board and protected by sturdy boxing. This is particularly beneficial if you have young children or pets at home that may interfere if there is not suitable cable storage.

If you are given the opportunity to work at home, ensure your workstation is suitable for what you are doing. It should allow you to get into a business frame of mind, be free from distraction and be neat and professional.
