What factors should businesses consider when implementing net zero strategies?

In an era marked by heightened environmental awareness and the urgent need for climate action, businesses are increasingly committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions. Achieving net zero—the state where the amount of greenhouse gases emitted equals the amount removed from the atmosphere—is not only crucial for the planet but beneficial for business resilience and growth. It is important to analyse various factors, including the different scopes of emissions and supply chains.

This guide will explore the various factors that businesses should consider on the road to becoming net zero.

What are the benefits of becoming net zero as a business?

Achieving net zero is an environmental decision and a strategic business move that can lead to significant economic, social, and regulatory benefits. As the world increasingly moves towards sustainability, businesses that embrace this transition can secure a leading edge in tomorrow’s economy, ensuring long-term success and stability. Along with addressing climate change concerns, the benefits of securing net-zero goals include:

  1. Cost savings through energy efficiency: By implementing more energy-efficient processes and technologies, businesses can significantly decrease their utility expenses.
  2. Enhanced brand reputation: Companies that commit to net zero targets often see a positive impact on their brand reputation. Consumers, investors, and other stakeholders increasingly prefer to engage with environmentally responsible companies.
  3. Access to new markets and investment opportunities: New markets are opening for sustainable products and services. Additionally, many investors now prioritise sustainability when deciding where to allocate their funds.
  4. Future-proofing the company: With governments worldwide tightening environmental regulations, moving towards net zero can help companies stay ahead of legal requirements and avoid potential fines or sanctions.
  5. Positive impact on the supply chain: Committing to net zero often involves changing the supply chain to reduce emissions. This can increase supply chain resilience and efficiency as businesses seek more sustainable and reliable partners.

Working with like-minded suppliers is a great way to showcase your commitment to becoming a net zero business, including analysing their environmental responsibilities, sustainability of the materials, and their carbon footprint.

What do businesses need to do to achieve net zero?

Achieving net zero emissions is a complex process that necessitates an interconnected approach to business operations, combining not only their own carbon emission, but that of their suppliers, partners and customer base. Initially, companies must conduct a thorough assessment of their current carbon footprint, identifying major sources of emissions across their operations, supply chain, and product lifecycle. This evaluation forms the foundation for setting realistic but ambitious targets aligned with international standards such as the Paris Agreement.

Subsequently, businesses should develop a clear strategy to reduce emissions. A net zero strategy involves a combination of reducing energy consumption, investing in renewable energy sources, and improving operational efficiencies. For emissions that cannot be eliminated, companies might consider carbon offset measures, such as investing in reforestation projects or renewable energy initiatives that compensate for their residual emissions.

What are the key factors for a net zero business?

The transition to net zero is multifaceted, requiring consideration of several key factors.

Financial planning is a critical factor. The shift to net zero will necessitate upfront investment in new technologies and processes. Businesses must carefully plan their investments, taking advantage of government grants, loans, and tax incentives designed to support sustainable practices.

Additionally, education and culture change within the organisation plays a significant role. Employees at all levels should be engaged in the company’s sustainability goals, with training and incentives that encourage sustainable practices. Leadership commitment is also essential, with senior leaders demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability through their actions and decisions.

Innovation is paramount; businesses must be willing to adopt new technologies and processes that reduce carbon emissions. This might include energy-efficient manufacturing techniques, converting to electric vehicles, and working with like-minded companies and suppliers.

What is CMD doing to become more sustainable?

Partnering with Auditel, CMD has made an active and effective decision to help reduce carbon emissions on the journey to becoming net zero. This involved an in-depth study of how the business operates, analysing our greenhouse gas emissions and where they come from.

Creating both short (five-year) and long (ten-year) term goals, we plan to reduce the number of emissions we emit into the atmosphere by addressing certain factors. This includes converting our fleet to electric vehicles, exploring renewable energy sources, and working with our suppliers and partners to better understand direct emissions and scope 3 emissions caused by the supply chain.

We continue to create ergonomic solutions for our customers, providing comprehensive product ranges of power distribution and workstation solutions. Promote healthier workspaces not only by educating staff with sustainable practices, but also by using locally sourced ergonomic office equipment that improve performance.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it important for businesses to reach net zero?

As the business industry accounts for a large percentage of the UK’s overall carbon emissions, medium and small businesses (SMEs) will play an important part in helping the country achieve net zero emissions by 2050. If the UK, along with other countries, achieves net zero emissions by 2050, there is a 50% chance of avoiding a “catastrophic” 1.5°C temperature rise by the year 2100, and help with climate change concerns.
