Electrical Protection – Residual Current Device

In today’s modern world we take electricity for granted but sometimes we might forget the risks that are associated with using electricity.

Changes to BS6396:200+A1:2015 now stipulates that electrical protection needs to be included in an office furniture power distribution system in the form of a 30mA Residual Current Device (RCD).

What is a Residual Current Device (RCD)?

An RCD monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit and checks to make sure that what is sent is also returned. The flow of electricity is measured in Amperes (Amps or A). If the current sent down the live wire, to the electrical appliance/product does not match the current that is sent back down the neutral wire, the RCD identifies a leak in the circuit and automatically stops the flow of electricity. The aim of this is to prevent irreversible damage to the normal cardiac cycle (‘ventricular fibrillation’) or/fatality from electrocution.

Why do I need a 30mA RCD?

All RCDs do the same job. They are constantly monitoring the flow of electricity and when a fault has detected the flow of electricity is stopped. The speed of which the RCD stops the flow of electricity is determined by the RCDs rating.

BS6396:2008+A1:2015 states that a 30 milliamp (30mA) RCD should be included in a furniture power distribution system. A 30mA RCD is classified as a high sensitivity device and is designed to be capable of stopping the flow of electricity within 40 milliseconds (depending on the fault to earth/imbalance). Preventing irreversible damage or death.

Injury from electrocution can be caused with as little as 0.5mA, in less than a tenth of a second, with anything over 40mA likely to cause a fatality.
